AP students are the first group to learn programming with AI available from the very first assignment. That is not cheating and it is not a character flaw, it is just the order things happened in. The catch is that the code gets finished long before the understanding does, and the AP exam is built to measure the understanding.

Where the gap shows up

  • • FRQs are handwritten, so there is no autocomplete and no compiler.
  • • Multiple choice asks you to trace code, not to generate it.
  • • Your teacher asks you to explain a lab you submitted three weeks ago.
  • • Unit tests in class are on paper while the homework was not.

What we do about it

  • • Separate what you own from what AI has been carrying for you.
  • • Rebuild only the concepts everything else is resting on.
  • • Keep using AI, but for hints, explanations, and extra practice instead of finished answers.
  • • Write and trace Java by hand until FRQ conditions feel normal.

My grades in AP CS are fine. Is this actually a problem?

Lab grades and a closed book exam measure completely different things. Plenty of students carry an A into May and then meet the FRQ section with no idea how to start on paper. Finding that out in October is a lot cheaper than finding it out during the exam.

How do I know if I am too dependent on AI?

Open a blank file and try to rebuild your last lab from scratch. If you cannot start, or you stall halfway, the gap is real. The free dependency test scores this across 10 skill areas so you get specifics instead of a vague bad feeling.

Is it too late if the exam is close?

Usually not. Students who feel furthest behind normally have a small number of broken fundamentals holding up everything else. Fix those and the rest moves fast, because you were never incapable, you were building on a cracked foundation.
