About the instructor

Joseph Abate

I help students master programming with clear explanations, structured practice, and practical advice from 6 years in the software industry and 8+ years of tutoring.

Most of the students I work with now can already finish the assignment. AI made sure of that. What they have quietly lost is the ability to explain what they submitted, and they usually find out at a closed book exam or in a technical interview.

Between shipping production code for 6 years and teaching for 8+, I have watched a lot of code meet reality: code review, a broken build at 2am, a professor asking you to walk through your own submission. That is a good filter. It shows very quickly which understanding is yours and which was borrowed.

What I focus on

  • Concept clarity with step-by-step explanations.
  • Using AI without losing the ability to think for yourself.
  • Exam prep that targets your exact weak spots.
  • Practical coding habits for real-world projects.
  • Confidence building so you can solve problems independently.

Who I help

  • High school students starting computer science.
  • College and university students in CS or software courses.
  • Career switchers building a portfolio or interview skills.
  • Independent learners who want expert accountability.

How I teach

Two rules do most of the work, and both of them are slower than just being handed the answer. That is the point.

Hints before answers

I will point you at the line that is wrong before I tell you why. You get the smallest nudge that lets you keep going, because the part you work out yourself is the part that is still there on exam day. I guide you, you write and submit your own work.

You explain it back

Before we move on, you walk me through the code in your own words. It is the fastest way to find out whether something actually landed, and it is exactly what a professor or an interviewer is going to ask you to do.

This is also how I teach students to use AI. Same tool, different question: ask for a hint, ask it to check your explanation, ask for three more problems. Never ask for the finished answer.
