A lab in this course is marked on whether the output is right, and ChatGPT gets a list comprehension or a file read right on the first attempt. So the loop you never traced, the dictionary you never indexed by hand, and the off by one you never hunted down all stay unlearned while your grade looks healthy. ITEC 1620 is not a hard course. The issue is that nothing in it forces you to do the thinking.
Your tests ask for the same Python with nothing open: read this loop and state the output, write a function from a description, repair a broken string method. Then there is the moment a professor points at one line of your submission and asks what it does. None of this makes you a bad student. It makes you a student learning to code in the AI era.
Nobody sensible is telling you to delete ChatGPT. The change is in what you ask it for. Have it explain a line rather than write the file, guess the output of your own loop before you run it, and ask for three more practice problems on dictionaries instead of the answer to the one you were assigned. It stays just as fast, and you finish the term able to write Python on a blank screen.
